- A man, intrigued by the beauty of
his own lawn, clings desperately to
the predictability of his life as his wife attempts to seduce him.
- Three gay men play Go Fish with
their American War Hero playing cards, discussing what they'll get
their lover returning from the Middle
East.
- A game of "Deficit Tag" takes place in which the
children must call out a way to
cut the US deficit before they are tagged (ala TV tag).
- A group of college students try
to build the courage to hold a
"real" conversation with the lunchlady . . . and fail.
All
of these situations took place during Responsive
Readings, the ensemble's debut performance. The show was
an in-depth look at a collection of written texts -- newspaper and
magazine articles, poems, editorials, parking tickets, etc -- from the
8 months
between March and October 2003, an extremely active and controversial
period in our nation's media. It explored the pace and priorities
reflected in our own undeniable records, the written word.
Responsive
Readings, was
produced as part of the Footlight Club's
(Jamaica Plain) 7-A series and later at the Devanaughn Theatre
(Boston).
Following this second performance, the ensemble was invited to perform
a 12-minute version of the show as a
special guest to Devanaughn's Dragonfly Festival of short plays, in May
2004. Rose Carlson, Producing Artistic Director of Devanaughn
Theatre, guest directed this abbreviated guest appearance.
