MEGAN ORWIG is a director, actor,
and improvisor who hails from the small town of Kankakee, Illinois, and
even though she lives in Cambridge, she still proudly calls herself a
Midwesterner. She graduated from Carleton College in Northfield,
Minnesota in 2002 with a B.A. in Theater Arts. While there, she
acted in numerous roles, including the Beggar Woman in Sondheim's
"Sweeney Todd", Jill in "Jack & Jill" by Jane Martin, the Balladeer
in "Assassins", and Nina in "Seagulls", an original
translation and adaptation of
Chekhov's "The Seagull."
Her directing credits include
"Lips Together, Teeth Apart" by Terrence McNally, "The Short Eyes
Project", an original script about racial tensions
inspired by the play by Miguel
Pinero, and "Art", by Yasmina Reza. Her
life in improvisation was
forced upon her by a caring, unwittingly cruel collegue that would not
allow her to quit her college long-form improv group. And its
been all downhill ever since.
After graduating, she spent a
year traveling to Mali, New Zealand, Scotland
and Ireland while on a Thomas
J. Watson Fellowship to study, collect, and learn lullabies from
various regions. She has studied classical voice for several
years, produced two full length voice recitals in college, and recently
completed her first season singing with the Boston area choir, the"Spectrum
Singers."
When not working as an artist,
Megan spends her time administrating the
Exploration Intermediate
Program, a summer academic enrichment program for 8th and 9th grade
students. In her free time, you could find her playing very-bad
guitar (usually bluegrass) or riding her 1986 vintage Schwinn road bike
as fast as she can.
